From student visa to PR: realistic pathways

One of the most common questions we hear is: "Will studying in Australia lead to permanent residency?" The honest answer is that it does not happen automatically, but study is often the first step on a realistic path to PR, if you plan it well from the start. Here is how the pieces fit together. The stepping stones

For most graduates, the journey looks like this: a Student visa (subclass 500) while you study, then a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to gain post-study work experience, then a permanent pathway, usually skilled or employer-sponsored. Study is the foundation; the permanent step is where the real planning happens.

Study with the end in mind

The qualifications and occupation you choose matter. Where possible, aligning your study to an occupation on a relevant skilled list, and considering study in a regional area (which can attract extra points and options), keeps more doors open later.

The 485 bridge

After you finish an eligible qualification, the Temporary Graduate visa gives you valuable time in Australia to work, improve your English, and gain a skills assessment and skilled work experience. This period is often what turns a study record into a competitive permanent application.

The skilled route

With experience and points behind you, the points-tested skilled visas (subclass 189, 190 and 491) become realistic. The employer-sponsored route

A realistic word
